The SBAR framework · Sojourn Creative

Tell any story in four beats

Nurses use SBAR at shift change to hand off a patient in under a minute with nothing important left out. I'm a nurse and a filmmaker, and I run every video through the same four letters. It holds up for a 30-second reel and a 30-minute film.

The framework

The four beats

Situation

What's happening right now?
One brief statement of what this video is about.
Example"Most videos lose people in the first 5 seconds."

Background

How did we get here?
The details that give context.
Example"You've got the footage, the idea, and the message, but no structure holding it together."

Assessment

Why does it matter?
Your insight, the thing you found out.
Example"Without a framework, even good footage rambles and viewers scroll."

Recommendation

What should they do?
The action step.
Example"Run every video through SBAR before you shoot."
The method

How to use it

Fill in one line per letter before you shoot.
Say it in order: S, B, A, R. That's your script spine.
Keep each beat to one or two sentences. Short-form rewards compression.

Same spine, any length

Short form

Each beat is a sentence or two. Four beats and you're done.

Long form

Each beat becomes a chapter. Situation opens the film, Background introduces the people, Assessment carries the turning point, and Recommendation is the ask.
Try it

Build your script spine

Type one line per letter. You'll get a script you can read straight to camera.
What you type stays on your device.

Your four beats will appear here, in order, ready to read to camera.

The storyteller

Hi, I'm Jian Salcedo

I'm a nurse, a documentary filmmaker, and the founder of Sojourn Creative in Springfield, Missouri. Years of shift-change handoffs taught me how to say what matters in the fewest words. Now I use that same discipline to help nonprofits, faith organizations, and brands tell stories people remember.

Have a story worth telling? Let's film it

SBAR gives you the spine. If you'd rather hand the whole story to a team that finds it, films it, and shapes it, book a call and tell me what you're working on.
